About This Website
This website was created as part of the joint research project, “Creation of a ‘Script Chronicle’ Website, and Educational Use and International Dissemination Thereof” (FY2017 Grand-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)).
The website is run jointly by the Graduate School of Japanese Broadcast Script Database Institute of Hosei University and the Consortium for the Promotion of Broadcast Script Archives in Japan. The database is created jointly with the National Institute for Informatics (NII).
The purpose of this website is to 1) shed light on the history of broadcasting; 2) understand the economic conditions and familial relationships at the time; 3) visualize the transformation of language from a linguistic perspective; and 4) attempt to conduct comparative studies of video and script material, production activities, and performances in educational settings and consider ways to apply such activities in language and communication education; through collecting and providing information about scripts that are valuable cultural sources, publishing oral histories focusing on screenwriters, and organizing and categorizing scripts. Another aim is to make the website available in multiple languages to enable international users to access archives of Japanese broadcasting culture.

Collected Script Materials
The database is based on the material collected, managed, and published by the Consortium for the Promotion of Broadcast Script Archives in Japan that began archiving scripts at an earlier stage and collaborates in the project.
We plan to upload oral history video clips of screenwriters, among other content, moving forward.
What is the Consortium for the Promotion of Broadcast Script Archives in Japan?
The Japanese broadcasting industry for a long time lacked a structure for systematically preserving scripts. For this reason, there is a risk of past scripts being scattered and lost. In particular, only a small number of recording have been preserved for programs created before 1980, the scripts on which those programs were based are considered highly valuable cultural resources.
Not only broadcast writers, but also all those involved in the industry need to work together to effectively promote script archiving initiatives. Thus, the Consortium for the Promotion of Broadcast Script Archives in Japan (Representative Director: Shunsaku Ikehata) was established as a platform for cooperation between broadcasting stations, production companies, commentators, and media researchers among others.
